Description & Learning Objectives

Part 1: Ethical Technology Use in Psychological Practice (1 CE)

Sara Smucker Barnwell, Ph.D.

This 1-hour webinar will explore the ethical and practical considerations of selecting technology products for psychological practice. From synchronous and asynchronous communication tools to practice management systems and emerging technologies, psychologists face a rapidly evolving landscape of options. What makes a product accessible, affordable, and ethically sound? How can you balance client needs, regulatory requirements, and professional values when there isn’t a clear “right” choice? The speaker will provide a framework to help psychologists navigate these decisions with confidence. Attendees will gain insights into aligning technology use with ethical and legal standards while managing risks and ensuring inclusivity. The webinar will feature lecture content, practical examples, and time for live Q&A to address participant questions.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify three key considerations for selecting technology products that align with ethical, legal, and professional standards in psychological practice.
  2. Define three challenges associated with the use of emerging technologies, such as digital therapeutics, apps, and other emerging technologies in clinical care.
  3. Describe a strategy to balance innovation with risk management when integrating new technologies into psychological practice.

Part 2: Guidelines and Pitfalls Regarding Professional Wills and Practice Executors: How to Meet Your Ethical Obligations to Plan for the Unexpected (2 CEs)

Robyn B. Miller, Ph.D. of TheraClosure

In this 2-hour practical workshop based on lived clinical experience, you will learn how to fulfill your ethical responsibilities to plan for the unexpected. We will review components of a comprehensive Professional Will and considerations in selecting a Practice Executor capable of fulfilling your wishes. The training will also address the clinical, business, and emotional considerations of abrupt practice suspension as the unforeseen impacts on patients, colleagues, and family. You will be provided with several accessible solutions to navigate this often avoided yet essential task, ensuring ethical compliance, protecting your patients from the risks of traumatic termination, and sparing your colleagues and family from unnecessary burden. Insights are drawn from the presenter’s first-hand experiences as a Practice Executor and will feature pitfalls and best practices.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Explain the psychotherapist’s ethical duty to plan for sudden terminations.
  2. Describe important components to include in a plan / professional will.
  3. List the clinical, business, and practical duties of a Practice Executor, and guidelines for best practice.
  4. Discuss and use templates for professional wills in consideration of one’s own directive.
  5. Identify the limitations of the current standard for psychologist’s professional wills and discuss the new option of outsourcing this responsibility.
