PSYPACT Roundtable Part 1

Presenters: Leisl Bryant, Ph.D., ABPP; Janet Pippin Orwig, MBA, CAE

Total CE: 1

In the first part of this series, Dr. Bryant will be joined by Janet Orwig, Executive Director of the PSYPACT Commission. The presentation and discussion will focus on clarifying and understanding key aspects of the compact, how it functions, and the legal and ethical obligations of psychologists who practice under it. The two components of PSYPACT that allow for interjurisdictional psychology practice (APIT and TAP) and their corresponding certificates (E.Passport and IPC) will be defined and differentiated from one another. Additional key terms and psychologists’ obligations under the compact will be delineated and explained, including: definition and requirements of “home state” when practicing under the E.Passport; whether and how practicing under PSYPACT impacts practice in non-compact states; how licensing board complaints are handled in the compact; whether supervisees can practice under their supervisor’s certificates; which distant and receiving state laws and regulations psychologists are obligated to know and follow; as well as issues related to appropriate informed consent when working in different states. This part of the series aims to provide clear information about the compact and how it works and to clarify ambiguities about certain aspects of practice under the compact.

Learning Objectives

  • Define and differentiate the two components of PSYPACT that allow for interjurisdictional psychology practice (APIT and TAP), as well as their corresponding certificates (E.Passport and IPC).
  • Describe the definition of "home state" and analyze how the "home state" requirement under PSYPACT impacts practice.
  • Describe how licensing board complaints are handled under the compact.
  • Identify which distant and receiving state laws and regulations psychologists are obligated to know and follow when practicing under the compact.

PSYPACT Roundtable Part 2

Presenters: Leisl Bryant, Ph.D., ABPP; Joe Scroppo, Ph.D., J.D.; Marc Martinez, Ph.D., ABPP

Total CE: 1

In the second part of the PSYPACT series, Dr. Bryant will be joined by two of her fellow risk managers, Drs. Scroppo and Martinez, to more specifically address risk management considerations specific to interjurisdictional practice under PSYPACT. Participants are encouraged to raise their own questions and concerns for discussion. Exploration of various risk management and ethical dilemmas will occur, with a focus on helping participants tease out the clinical, legal, ethical, and risk management factors. Together, participants will work to see the risk management implications of specific situations and choices, scrutinize options for resolution, and foster a tolerance for ambiguity and the understanding that there may be no single ideal solution to each challenge. We will also discuss strategies for effective risk management and good patient care when regulations and requirements are unclear.
